Resilient Communities

Tracey has been involved in building resilient communities since 2006 with exposure across a range of areas including:

  • Climate adaptation and resilience
  • Urban and community resilience;
  • Disaster preparedness; and
  • The transition to a low carbon economy, and
  • Infrastructure sustainability.

Working Visions has worked extensively with community groups, government agencies and individuals on recovery projects aimed at building resilience in communities affected by natural disasters.  Our specialist partners have extensive experience in disaster recovery including waste management and community recovery.  We work with regional and remote communities as they transition to a low carbon economy.

During 2006/2007 Tracey worked with General Sir Peter Cosgrove on the recovery and rebuilding of the Cyclone Larry affected area in Far North Queensland, as manager of strategy, communications and engagement for the Building Coordination Centre, part of the Operation Recovery Taskforce, administered by the Queensland Building Services Authority and under General Cosgrove’s leadership. Post Cyclone Yasi from February 2011 until March 2012, Tracey managed similar functions for the Building Services Authority office, situated in Tully North Queensland, focussing on increased infrastructure sustainability and building more resilient communities.

“Lessons from Larry into Yasi and Beyond” was a 2016 presentation for an International Association for Public Participation (IAP2) conference. It depicts Tracey’s professional journey and “lessons learnt” whilst engaging post both cyclones, linked to the IAP2 Spectrum of Engagement. There are also some personal observations and a collection of comments from colleagues who worked to restore their communities in the Cassowary Coast region of Queensland, post both cyclones.  There is always much interest in this presentation so we’ve taken the liberty of having it made into a video format.  Most of Tracey’s colleagues have moved onto other roles but we’ve retained the original copy for historical reference.

Tracey has completed the Queensland Disaster Arrangement Course and the Mental Health Academy’s Disaster Mental Health Course for first responders presented by Dr Cirecie A. West-Olatunji
